Description: This interactive animation schematically shows deep drawing of cylindrical cups. During deep-drawing the circular punch forces the blank through the draw ring and forms into a cup. The punch force, Fp is transferred via the bottom of the punch/blank and the cup wall into the sheet which deforms between the blankholder and draw ring. The blankholder force, FBH prevents it from wrinkling due to the tangential compressive strain in the forming zone. As the punch travels downwards the sheet metal flows under the blankholder over the radius of the draw ring and into the die cavity. During the deep drawing process the sheet thickness (and the surface area) remains almost constant.
