Description: The traditional method for determining fatigue life involves measuring the total life for crack initiation and growth. Since the time for crack initiation is very sensitive to the surface finish of the material, it is critical that this is carefully controlled. Tests are performed across a range of stress amplitudes and plot of stress amplitude (S) against cycles to failure (N) is produced, commonly known as an S-N curve. This animations shows a typical S-N curve.
