Description: Potential-pH or Pourbaix diagrams are powerful tools in electrochemistry. They show graphically the regions of thermodynamic stability for metal/electrolyte systems and they are used to predict whether or not a metal could corrode or not. The Nernst equation is used to construct these diagrams. This exercise explains how the Pourbaix diagrams for water, zinc and copper are constructed. You are then asked to construct the Pourbaix diagram for aluminium yourself. The first step in constructing a Pourbaix diagram is the stability diagram for water.
