Description: In contact with moisture from the environment or by immersion in boiling water the outer surface of the alumina film becomes hydrated. The oxide film formed in boiling water is expected to be thicker and more protective compared to the film formed in moisture. This animation shows how alumina film further reacts with moisture and boiling water respectively. Click on each diagram to see how the new alumina film is formed in both cases. lImmersion of aluminium in boiling water is called boehmitage (formation of boehmite, Al2O3.H2O(s)) and is used industrially to improve the corrosion properties of aluminium.
