Description: Very small second phases precipitates appear to be harmless. However if they are in located preferentially at grain boundaries they may be able to promote intergranular corrosion. Particularly, if small precipitates are closely spaced so that they can form a semi-continuous network along grain boundaries. This animation is a virtual experiment in which two aluminium alloys are corroded by adding an acidified NaCl solution. The animation shows differencies between pitting and itergranular corrosion, and formation of a precipitate free zone (PFZ).
