Description: Together with incorrect application of protective treatments and unawareness of corrosion risks, material selection and design faults rank very high in the reasons for failure by corrosion. Important rules which apply to selection of materials and design for a metal construction include: avoid contact between different metals or ensure that fasteners or bolts are more noble than the structural parts to minimise galvanic effects; avoid crevices or liquid traps in the design; avoid in liquid flow constructions: turbulence effects causing erosion damage and direct impingement or splashing of corrosive liquid. This exercise explores all these rules applied to different designs.
