Description: This video explains in details the technology Idaho National Laboratory (INL) researchers have developed to recover valuable alpha-emitting medical isotopes, which is called Medical Actinium for Therapeutic Treatment, or MATT, and which consists of two innovative processes (MATT CAR and MATT BAR). Both processes start with reactor fuel pellets, that are 3% uranium-233 and 97% thorium-232, being dissolved in acid. The animations illustrate both processes, the Continuous Actinium Recovery or MATT CAR process and the Batch Actinium Recovery or MATT BAR process. MATT CAR process uses liquid-liquid separation, with uranium and thorium being transferred into an organic phase and desired medical isotope, actinium-225 and its progenitor radium-225 being recovered. MATT BAR process uses a precipitation method to isolate thorium and then wash it to extract actinium for capture on a column. In both cases separated actinium can easily be stripped from the column and readied for shipment to awaiting medical facilities.
