Description: In this video lecture, it is shown that if the coordinate axes for a stress tensor are rotated by special angles, the shear stress τ is equal to zero. These angles define the principal axes (or planes) and the corresponding normal stresses, σ are termed the principal stresses. The rotation angle that produces the maximum shear stress is also derived.
